We eat too much salt. To reduce it, it is necessary to change diet and habits. In most parts of the world, we eat too much salt . For this reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set a specific goal for the various countries: to reach, by 2025 , salt consumption thresholds that respect the recommended dose of 5 grams per day (the equivalent of one teaspoon) per person. In Italy, some agreements with the food industries are beginning to concretely implement this attempt at change, which is difficult to achieve but not impossible if each of us acts on the basis of our habits and personal and domestic diet.
The consequences on health
Salt is a food present in almost all foods, even where we would not expect to find it. It is present in a “hidden” way in most of the things we eat and in almost all industrially produced dishes. The 5 grams of salt per day suggested by the WHO includes both this hidden salt, already naturally contained in food, and what we add during or after the preparation of meals. Above this threshold it can have serious consequences for health:
  • Development of hypertension, which in addition to being a disease in itself is also a risk factor for strokes and heart attacks.
  • Weight gain due to fluid retention due to salt.
  • Increased risk of developing kidney or gallbladder stones.
  • Correlations with some types of intestinal cancer.
The Italian Minisal studio
A study by the Minisal-GIRCSI project coordinated by the Medical Collaboration Committee has certified that the salt consumed in Italy is definitely too much and that there is a strong link between sodium consumption indices and obese and overweight people . In some areas of Italy, more than double the amount recommended by the WHO is consumed daily!
How to reverse the trend?
Although agreements have been made in recent years with food industries regarding a gradual reduction in the doses of salt in bread and products intended for children, there is still too much salt in use. It gives flavor to foods and extends their commercial life, for these reasons it is widely used. But how to change this trend? You have to start from your habits and therefore:
  • Do not add salt to baby food. Never in the first year of age and very carefully even after, so as not to get them used to too savory tastes.
  • Choose foods with low sodium content, in order to incentivize the industry to offer more products of this type.
  • Use spices, herbs, vinegar and lemon to add flavor to foods.
  • Replace the salt at home with Ideale, which with the same taste contains up to 75% less sodium.

Reducing daily sodium doses and leading a healthier diet: here are some tips on what we can do in the kitchen

The intake of the right amount of sodium is essential for survival: the WHO has established the maximum daily threshold of 2 grams of sodium. The statistics confirm that in Italy (but in much of the rest of the world is no different) almost all exceed this threshold, sometimes without even realizing it because a lot of salt is “hidden” in foods. What tips can you follow in the kitchen for a healthier diet? Let’s find out together.
Good habits for decreasing salt doses
The risks involved when taking too high sodium doses are known: increased blood pressure, and therefore hypertension, higher chances of getting cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and some types of cancer. Reducing the amount of sodium is very important, here are some tips on good practices to be activated in the kitchen:

  • During the preparation and / or seasoning of food, use less salt, or use IDEALE which, compared to normal table salt, reduces the amount of sodium in its LIQUID and SPRAY form by 75% and by 50% in its Coarse formats and until. For example, when cooking pasta, you can cook it in unsalted water and, only at the end, add IDEALE spray, easy to dose, which guarantees the right flavor by drastically reducing the amount of sodium.
  • o Avoid eating between meals: it is not only good for the figure but also reduces the amount of salt taken, especially if you indulge in salty snacks, very rich in sodium. If you can’t get enough of a snack, choose fresh, healthy foods like fruit or vegetables.
  • o Cook at home rather than going out to eat: once in a while is fine, but eating often at a restaurant or bar reduces control over the amount of sodium you consume.
  • o Avoid using sauces: soy sauce, mayonnaise, mustard are rich in sodium and are often also a source of superfasts.
  • o Check the labels of the foods you buy at the grocery store to get used to understanding how much sodium they contain and avoid those with excessive doses of salt. Pay particular attention to products such as stock cubes or freeze-dried soups.
  • o Use spices more: they are specially made to flavor foods! Garlic, onion, and lemon can also help make your cooking healthier.
